1. The Number One Trick to Make It Fuller – Plant More Cuttings!

You can make the string of pearls appear fuller by taking a few cuttings from the plant and growing them together in the same pot. When cuttings start to grow, they will cover more space, making the plant look bigger and fuller!

Do this trick whenever it grows long, and you will have a bushier-looking plant!

2. Keep an Eye on Watering

While growing String of Pearls, you have to understand that the volume of water is more important than the frequency. If you are going to water the plant too frequently, then it will kill the plant due to overwatering. However, when you water it, do it thoroughly.

The best way to water any string of pearls is to take its pot to the sink or tub and run the water slowly, once the water starts draining out from the bottom holes of the pot for a good 1-2 minutes. Stop! This will deeply saturate the soil.

Once done, do not water the plant again till the growing medium becomes dry, and topsoil starts to form minor cracks. This will be the indication that now is the time to water the plant again.

Also, avoid watering the plant frequently in the wet and winter months. Remember, water deeply only when the topsoil is a bit dry.

3. Avoid Using Hard Water

The string of pearls doesn’t like being irrigated with hard water. It also coats up its tiny pea-shaped leaves with a thin layer of calcium, which appear as white water spots, which also promote falling off of its leaves.

Not to mention the fact that these stains hamper the plant’s ability to absorb light as well, which affects the photosynthesis of the plant, making it grow at a slower pace.

Pro Tip: The best way to avoid this problem is to use soft or filtered water or let the tap water sit overnight to let the deposits settle down.

4. Light is the Key

While growing outdoors, place your curio rowleyanus in partial shade, and indoors keep it on a spot where it receives bright and indirect light for 6-8 hours, in-between that exposure to 2-3 hours of direct sunlight helps the plant grow.

Note: Avoid keeping a string of pearls in an area that gets intense afternoon sun.

5. Avoid Too Big or Deep Pot

Keep in mind not to use an extra-large pot for growing the plant. Select right-size containers, which are not too deep because a string of pearls has shallow roots. A deeper pot will have more soil, which will remain wet for a long duration, and this will increase the chances of rot and diseases.

Drainage holes are also important, so extra water can drip out of the container. Also, make sure that the crown of the plant is just 1/2 to 1 inch below the top of the container.

6. Save from Cold

Protect your string of pearls from extreme cold as it’s not a frost-tolerant plant. It can withstand a minimum temperature down to 20 F (7 C). This is why it’s important to keep it in a warm spot indoors in winters.

7. Select the Right Growing Medium

Avoid using regular garden soil or compact growing medium for a string of pearls. This plant has long, thin roots and stems that require a well-draining potting mix for preventing root rot.

The best is to go for a potting mix designed specifically for cacti and succulents. You can also mix two parts of cactus mix with one part of coarse sand.

8. Fertilize it Right

Fertilize it frequently but mildly–once in 10-14 days using a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer, diluted to just 1/4 of its recommended strength.

Do not fertilize the plant in winters in cold climates as it won’t be actively growing at this time, and feeding it during that time will do more harm than good.
